Proponents further claim the enclosed structure functions as an engineered prison or terrarium, and some adherents link the theory to broader conspiratorial frameworks involving reptilian entities, the Illuminati, and an artificial Moon.

Origins: The theory draws heavily on the Koreshan Unity movement led by Cyrus Teed in late-nineteenth-century America, whose followers conducted the 1897 'rectilineator' survey along the Naples, Florida coastline and interpreted its results as empirical proof of an upward-curving surface. The concept was revived and expanded in online conspiracy communities during the 2000s and 2010s, partly as an offshoot of Flat Earth discourse, disseminating through forums, YouTube channels, and alternative media platforms.

How believers defend it: Adherents defend the theory primarily by invoking the claim that a concave geometry is observationally indistinguishable from a convex one, thereby framing any standard scientific rebuttal as inherently incapable of falsifying the model. Scientific refutations, NASA statements, and mainstream media dismissals are routinely reinterpreted by proponents as evidence of an active institutional cover-up, reinforcing rather than undermining belief in the theory.

The theory traces its primary "proof" to a nineteenth-century religious commune and adds layers of reptilian elite mythology to complete the narrative. Each of its factual premises is either straightforwardly false or fatally misrepresents the underlying record.

The cornerstone experiment the theory cites is real, but its actual history demolishes rather than supports the claim. Cyrus Reed Teed was a physician and alchemist turned pseudoscientific religious leader and self-proclaimed messiah who, claiming divine inspiration in 1869, proposed a set of cosmological ideas he called Koreshanity, including the belief that the Earth is a concave, hollow sphere and that all of humanity lives on its interior surface. Cellular Cosmogony posited that humans were held to the inner surface by centrifugal force rather than gravity, and that the sun was an electromagnetic battery-operated helix at the system's center. Teed's Geodetic Survey staff devised the rectilineator and conducted tests on the Gulf Coast at Naples, publishing the results as proof that the Earth was concave. What the theory omits is the forensic analysis of that experiment. Donald Simanek of Lock Haven University examined the 1897 survey in detail for the National Center for Science Education. He traced the error not to fraud but to a systematic flaw: the rectilineator was supposed to project a perfectly straight line, but "even if the rectilineator had been designed properly, and as rigid as good engineering design would allow, the structure would still not be perfectly rigid." The resulting sag of the apparatus, compounded by expectation bias in selecting which measurements to keep, fully accounts for the published result. The experiment returned results that seemed to indicate an upward curve, but this was either a flaw in the rectilineator's sagging design, expectation bias, fudged figures, or all of the above. The men running the instrument were the devoted followers of a man who had proclaimed himself the Messiah and promised resurrection from the dead; as Teed lay dying he declared he would rise on the third day, his followers maintained vigil over his decomposing body, and county health inspectors ultimately had to compel them to bury it. This is the source of the theory's flagship "proof."

The claim that the concave geometry is observationally indistinguishable from the convex one — and therefore cannot be disproved — is the theory's most intellectually seductive move, and it is also its own self-destruction. As analyst Martin Gardner observed regarding a mathematically consistent concave-Earth model, it "cannot be falsified by any conceivable observation or experiment," and such a question treats unfalsifiability as an alibi rather than a liability. In science, a model that cannot be falsified by any evidence is not a triumph — it is a hypothesis that has abdicated the right to be called knowledge. By this logic, the interior of a teapot orbiting Neptune is also observationally compatible with everything we see; that is not evidence for the teapot. Moreover, the claim of indistinguishability fails the moment independent data streams are consulted together. Seismology has provided clear evidence that Earth has a solid crust, a viscous mantle, a liquid outer core, and a solid inner core. The way seismic waves propagate and reflect indicates a complex, layered structure, and if the Earth were hollow, seismic wave patterns would be vastly different from what is observed. Seismology is arguably the most powerful tool for probing Earth's interior: seismic waves generated by earthquakes propagate through the planet and are recorded by a global network of seismographs, and by analyzing travel times, amplitudes, and waveforms, geophysicists can infer the properties of the materials through which the waves pass. A hollow or concave geometry would produce a completely different seismic signature, with no layered density gradient, no liquid outer core signal, and no shadow zones — none of which matches what thousands of independent seismic stations on every continent record with every major earthquake. Evidence on the structure and composition of Earth's interior comes from surface rock observations, geophysical data from earthquakes, heat flow from the interior, the magnetic field, gravity, laboratory experiments on minerals, and comparison with other planetary bodies. These are independent data streams assembled by researchers across dozens of countries with no shared institutional interest; for the concave-Earth narrative to hold, every seismology department, every national geological survey, and every university physics faculty on Earth would have to be sustaining coordinated, leak-free deception for over a century. No such mechanism is proposed, no whistle-blower has emerged, and no defector from this alleged conspiracy has ever produced a primary document. The burden of proof for that scale of secret-keeping is crushing, and the theory offers nothing to meet it.

The theory does tap into a genuine and legitimate concern: institutions do sometimes mislead the public, and science has a documented history of errors, conflicts of interest, and delayed transparency. The reasonable response to that concern is institutional reform, peer scrutiny, and open data — all tools that have actually corrected scientific mistakes over time. What the concave-Earth narrative does instead is sever that legitimate grievance from any mechanism of resolution. By declaring all contrary evidence fabricated and all disconfirming observations the product of distorted instruments inside the enclosure, the theory becomes permanently immune to correction. Such an approach treats unfalsifiability as an alibi and assumes, naively, that models are innocent until proven guilty. The reptilian and occult overlay — accusing unnamed world leaders, prominent families, and royals of being nonhuman controllers of an engineered prison — adds a dehumanizing logic that historically has been weaponized to justify real-world hostility toward named categories of people, even when those individuals are entirely uninvolved. The theory does not explain how the elite maintain their occult terrarium; it simply asserts the conspiracy is real because the world feels controlled. That is not evidence — it is the emotional architecture of a closed system that answers every question by deepening the mystery rather than resolving it.
