Claims that a secret Jewish plan for global domination is documented in a text called 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.'

Origins: A fabricated antisemitic forgery produced by the Russian secret police (Okhrana) around 1903, plagiarized from Maurice Joly's unrelated 1864 satire. Exposed as a forgery by The Times of London in 1921, yet still circulated worldwide.

How believers defend it: Adherents claim the forgery exposure was itself a cover-up, argue the text is 'accurate regardless of who wrote it' because world events seem to match it, and treat its long survival as proof of its relevance.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a real document — it exists, it circulated widely, and it has caused genuine harm. What it is not is authentic. Investigative journalism established as early as 1921 that it was fabricated by Tsarist secret police, largely plagiarized from a 19th-century French political satire that had nothing to do with Jewish people. The text describes a fictional Jewish council; no such council existed. The forgery spread because it was useful propaganda, not because it recorded anything real.

The leap from there to "therefore the plan is real and operating" runs on a specific move: treating the exposure of the document as a forgery as itself evidence of a cover-up. Once that step is accepted, nothing can count against the claim — a missing document proves concealment, a debunking proves control of information. That is the feeling of a pattern locking into place, not evidence of one. It also asks you to accept a conspiracy so vast and so perfectly maintained that its only traces are a text proven to be plagiarized fiction. The simpler question worth sitting with: if the document is a demonstrated copy of an unrelated French novel, what does the claim rest on once that foundation is removed?

The *Protocols of the Elders of Zion* first appeared in print on 28 August 1903, serialized by Pavel Krushevan in the St. Petersburg antisemitic newspaper *Znamya* (The Banner). The text was framed as the recorded minutes of a secret Jewish and Masonic council plotting world domination through control of finance, media, and governments. Scholars have documented that the work was largely plagiarized from Maurice Joly's 1864 political satire *Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu* and drew on imagery from Hermann Goedsche's 1868 novel *Biarritz*, placing it within a longer lineage that includes medieval blood libel traditions and Russian Black Hundreds antisemitism.

In 1905, Sergei Nilus published the full text as an appendix to his book *The Great in the Small*, and the document was subsequently used to help justify anti-Jewish pogroms in Russia. By 1920 an English-language edition titled *The Jewish Peril* appeared, and *The Times* of London initially described it in credulous terms before journalist Philip Graves exposed it as a forgery in August 1921. Between 1920 and 1927, Henry Ford reprinted approximately 500,000 copies through his *Dearborn Independent* under the series title *The International Jew*, significantly broadening its reach in the United States. Alfred Rosenberg produced a German edition in 1923, and the text was later incorporated into Nazi school curricula and referenced in *Mein Kampf*, cementing its global circulation through state-sponsored distribution in the 1930s.
